Why day one digital is inevitable.
So we have all heard the argument before, physical media verses digital media.
The question has never been more relevant, especially now with technology taking leaps and bounds everyday.
It has effected every major entertainment industry so far, just take a look at the music industry for instance. Gone are the days of buying CD’s, being replaced by Apple Music and streaming services alike. People used to go to retailers to buy the next hot game, now you can download the game the same day it comes out to your system. Even TV is being slowly converted with Netflix streaming episodes of shows the same day they are being aired on cable, along with their original programming.
Cinema seems to be the only source of entertainment that has yet fallen to the rise of digital media, but I feel the change is inevitable. Don’t get me wrong, I think there will always be people willing to go to the movies (my self included), but I see them being viewed similar to the way we look at record shops. We visit them for the social experience.
The time will eventually come where distributors will realize if they release their movie straight to streaming services the same day it is released in theaters, and charge the same price for it, it will maximize their profits. Like any industry it is a business after all.
But with the ever decreasing space we live in, and the convenience of having everything right at our finger tips, maybe day one digital isn’t a bad thing after all.
