Sicario Review

“You should move to a small town, somewhere the rule of law still exists. You will not survive here. You are not a wolf, and this is a land of wolves now.”

Sicario follows FBI agent Kate Macer (Emily Blunt) and her war against drugs opposing the Mexican drug cartel, when she is recruited by a government official Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) led by the mysterious Alehandro (Benicio Del Toro).

Sicario

Emily Blunt continues her progression from Edge Of Tomorrow nailing the straight laced, serious action orientated role she has been given as a idealistic FBI agent. Whilst Benicio Del Toro reminds us of the Oscar winning qualities he possesses portraying the shadowy intense specialist role for the task force. Josh Brolin puts in a satisfying performance as the leading government official, doing the best with what he was given but in the end his character ended quite abruptly and would of benefited with being fleshed out more.

Denis Villeneuve does a brilliant job of directing the move, with plenty of stunning vistas and interesting directorial choices that pay off. The section where the team are heading down to the tunnels is especially striking making you sit up and pay attention. The music in this film also deserves praise building up the tension and keeping you on the edge of your seat at all times.

In the end Sicario is a well acted, well shot, well directed and well paced movie that deserves the Oscar buzz that it’s getting. However, like most Oscar winning films this is definitely a one watch movie. Nevertheless if you do not see this movie you will be missing out on some of Benicio Del Toro’s greatest work to date, given you more than enough reason to check out this film.

Entourage season one/two review.

Entourage is a comedy drama  released on 18th July 2004. It is produced by Mark Wahleberg and stars Adrian Grenier, Jerry Ferrara, Kevin Connolly, Kevin Dillon and Jeremy Piven.

Entourage follows an up and coming actor in Hollywood, Vincent Chase and his group of friends Turtle, Eric and big brother Johnny “Drama”, following the high, lows, glitz, glamour and shenanigans that come with being a movie star on the rise. Chock full of cameos from the likes of Jessica Alba, Jimmy Kimmel, Scarlett Johnansson and yes even James Cameron who is directing his big superhero epic ‘Aquaman’ and wants Vince for the leading role. Entourage gives a convincing portrayal on what it would be like to live in the bizarre world of Hollywood and gives you an engaging peek (admittedly exaggerated) look behind the curtain of the acting world.

The surprising stand out though is Ari Gold, portrayed by Jeremy Piven. You can tell Piven is having an absolute blast playing the outlandish, demanding, comedic and quick witted talent agent. You would think this kind of role would be played up for laughs (which it definitely is in season one), but by the end of season two Ari’s story ark take a surprisingly refreshing and touching turn as you find out there are multiple layers to this fast talking agent.

Entourage is a show tailor made for me. Great characters, check. Shows the inner workings of Hollywood, check.  Star studded cameos, check. If your into movies and film just half as much as I am, you owe it to your self to check out this show.

Why day one digital is inevitable.

So we have all heard the argument before, physical media verses digital media.

The question has never been more relevant, especially now with technology taking leaps and bounds everyday.

It has effected every major entertainment industry so far, just take a look at the music industry for instance. Gone are the days of buying CD’s, being replaced by Apple Music and streaming services alike. People used to go to retailers to buy the next hot game, now you can download the game the same day it comes out to your system.  Even TV is being slowly converted with Netflix streaming episodes of shows the same day they are being aired on cable, along with their original programming.

Cinema seems to be the only source of entertainment that has yet fallen to the rise of digital media, but I feel the change is inevitable. Don’t get me wrong, I think there will always be people willing to go to the movies (my self included), but I see them being viewed similar to the way we look at record shops. We visit them for the social experience.

The time will eventually come where distributors  will realize if they release their movie straight to streaming services the same day it is released in theaters, and charge the same price for it, it will maximize their profits. Like any industry it is a business after all.

But with the ever decreasing space we live in, and the convenience of having everything right at our finger tips, maybe day one digital isn’t a bad thing after all.
